How cumulative GPA is calculated

Each grade is converted to grade points, multiplied by the course credits, summed, and divided by total credits. To combine with an earlier GPA, multiply your prior GPA by prior credits, add the new quality points, and divide by all credits.

Weighted vs unweighted

Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0. Many high schools add 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, IB or dual-enrollment courses; policies vary, so check your school's handbook. Most colleges use unweighted GPA.
